The Cuba City American Legion Henry Pinch Post 104 is celebrating 100 years. According to the American Legion website, the American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in their communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to their fellow service members and veterans.
There are currently thirty members of the Cuba City branch and Don Gronemus is the current Commander of the American Legion Henry Pinch Post 104. Memorial week is one of their busiest weeks of the year. The group put flags up in the cemeteries on Monday, May 20. On Sunday, May 26 they will be doing presentations at the St.Rose cemetery at 11:15 a.m. followed by presentations at Mt.Pleasant cemetery and Veteran’s park. Some of the other things the American Legion does for the community is funerals for Veterans, appear in local parades, and area schools’ Veteran’s Day programs. “We take admission for the Grant County Fair and have burger and brat stands at Weber’s Meats,” said member Del Tranel. The group also donates to the Badger State boys and girls camp. “We visit the nursing homes on Veteran’s day,” said member Jim Brant. The American Legion works with the surrounding VFWs and Legions. Some members of the Cuba City VFW are also members of the American Legion.
The American Legion also rents out their hall to the community. The American Legion Post 104 is located on Calhaun St. across from Splinter Park in Cuba City.
The American welcomes those who have served and want to join. “We are always looking for members,” said Gronemus.
